This plan shows the outlines of the buildings that made up the Palace of Westminster during the eighteenth century. Of particular interest - Westminster Hall: Originally built in 1099 it hosted law courts as well as state trials such as that of Warren Hastings.
The House of Commons: At the Reformation, the religious foundation of St Stephen within the Palace of Westminster was dissolved, and its chapel became the meeting place of the Commons from about 1547.
The House of Lords: The House of Lords occupied the Queen's Chamber until it moved to the Court of Requests following union with Ireland in 1801.
Old Palace Yard: In 1786 William Wilberforce purchased the lease of a house here and it became a centre of activity for those opposed to the slave trade.
