Behind the glamour of a liner like Queen Mary, or the work of the cargo ships, there was an army of workers in the docks at Southampton supporting, building and supplying the ships. Before World War Two and before mechanisation replaced many workers, the docks were like a city with thousands of people employed directly or indirectly in keeping the ships and the goods on the move.
